Siaya Governor James Orengo Criticizes ODM’s Potential Alliance with President Ruto as a ‘Disaster’ and ‘Abomination’
Siaya Governor James Orengo has sharply condemned the idea of ODM joining President William Ruto’s administration, describing it as a grievous mistake and a disaster that is doomed to fail.
His comments emerge amid growing factionalism within the party concerning ODM leader Raila Odinga’s suggestions for a national dialogue with the Kenya Kwanza administration aimed at establishing a broadly inclusive government.
Orengo stressed the importance of addressing the grievances of families impacted by recent protests, asserting that their needs should take precedence over political maneuvering for positions.
“Setting aside my role as governor, justice must prevail. We must address these injustices now, not later,” Orengo declared.
He made these statements in North Alego, Siaya County, during the funeral of 25-year-old Kevin Onyango, who was killed in the anti-government protests.
“We cannot, while mourning our people, have some scrambling for positions. This is unacceptable.”
Governor Orengo asserted that Kenyans must heed the pleas of grieving families like Mama Kevin’s to ensure justice is achieved.
“I visited morgues and saw our children there. People claim this is not our conflict, yet our children are casualties. How can we join a government when justice for the deceased has not been served? I cannot accept this,” he stated.
He warned that joining the Kenya Kwanza administration would be a mistake and an abomination, predicting it would not succeed.
The governor also addressed critics who argue that President Ruto’s exit would create a constitutional crisis.
“I want to clarify that Ruto’s departure will not cause a catastrophe. We’ve seen powerful leaders leave before, and life goes on. I, too, will eventually leave, and the world will not end,” he noted.
Governor Orengo reiterated his support for Raila Odinga.

Recently, Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga expressed concerns that calls for President Ruto’s resignation might lead to unconstitutional changes in government and destabilize the country further.
Oburu also highlighted that ODM is prepared to participate in the national dialogue and support President Ruto’s plan for an inclusive political setup that could integrate opposition figures into the Kenya Kwanza Administration.
On Friday, some leaders from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition reaffirmed their refusal to join the proposed broad-based government that President Ruto plans to establish.
Azimio principal Kalonzo Musyoka stated that joining the proposed government of national unity would be a betrayal, particularly to Gen Z and millennials.
“We will not participate in or endorse the proposed Kenya Kwanza-led broad-based government of national unity. This would be a betrayal of the Kenyan people, especially Gen Z and millennials, who have made significant sacrifices,” Kalonzo asserted.
He mentioned that this decision was made by the Wiper Democratic Movement, Jubilee Party, DAP-Kenya Party, Party of National Unity (PNU), and Narc-Kenya during their National Executive Council (NEC) meetings.
