“Shoot and Kill” – UDA MP Says in Support of President Ruto’s Order
Belgut MP Nelson Koech has caused a stir after urging police officers to use deadly force against violent protesters. Koech, who also chairs the Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations Committee in Parliament, said officers should be allowed to “shoot to kill” when their lives are in danger.
Speaking on Wednesday in Chebirbei, Kericho County, Koech strongly supported President William Ruto’s earlier directive that police should aim for the legs of rioters. He insisted that the instruction should go even further.
“I thank President Ruto, but I say this — don’t just shoot to injure. Shoot to kill!” Koech said.
The MP argued that violent protests are now putting lives and property at risk, and the police must respond firmly. He said criminals had taken over what began as peaceful demonstrations, using them as a cover to cause chaos.
“You can’t allow someone to attack your family or business and expect not to act. If they are armed and threatening, the police must respond with equal force — and that means shoot to kill,” he added.
Koech referred to the law, saying the National Police Service Act gives officers the right to use their firearms if they assess a threat to their lives. He defended this legal backing, explaining that the Constitution supports such action when properly evaluated.
He also warned that anyone attempting to access protected government sites like State House should be treated as a criminal. Koech referenced the June 25 protests, where demonstrators planned to march to State House.

“Anyone trying to enter a protected area like State House is not an innocent protester — that’s a criminal threat. The police should respond with deadly force,” Koech stressed.
Koech also denied claims that the government was planting goons to cause chaos during demonstrations. He asked why critics would be upset if the government pursued those same alleged criminals.
“If you say the government is hiring goons, then why complain when the police arrest them?” he asked.
He added that violent protesters will be charged under anti-terrorism laws. According to him, those who destroy homes, businesses, and infrastructure are no different from terrorists.
“We’ll arrest them and charge them. These are not ordinary protesters — they are terrorists or people aiding terrorism,” Koech said.
The MP concluded with a strong warning to anyone promoting violence, saying the Kenya Kwanza administration would not support bloodshed.
“This country has seen too much blood. We will not be part of any plot to cause violence,” he warned.
