Shocking Revelation: Woman Arrested in Mlolongo for Trafficking Babies, Selling Them at Ksh.50K

Police in Mlolongo, Machakos County, have apprehended a woman believed to be a member of a child-theft ring operating in the area and linked to the abduction of three children.

A resident who witnessed Miriam Wesonga fleeing in March after allegedly stealing a baby raised the alarm, leading to her arrest.

Later, the two-and-a-half-year-old boy was located in the county of Kakamega.

Miriam, who allegedly confessed to working with two other accomplices, claims she received Ksh. 50,000 for delivering children to her clients.

In March, a resident who witnessed her fleeing with a child raised the alarm, which led to her arrest.

“Mimi ndiye mtoto wangu alikuwa amepotea March tukampata huko Ogalo market, sasa huyu msichana amerudi leo hatujui kama ni kusurvey alikuwa anasurvey huyu rafiki yetu ndio alimuona akamshika akatuambia โ€ฆ,” said Boniface Kinywa, a resident of Mlolongo.

Residents then delivered her to the chief’s office, where she was interrogated and confessed to being a member of a baby theft ring engaged in the illegal business of kidnapping children and selling them for as little as Ksh.50,000.

“Amesema huwa wako mama watatu wanafanya hiyo biashara. Wanachukua watoto pande hii wanapeleka nchi jirani ya Uganda wanaenda kuuza hao watoto huko na anasema alikuwa amepewa elfu hamsini, kwa kila mtoto wanapewa elfu hamsini,” said Mlolongo Chief Peter Ndunda.

Miriam, according to Ndunda, who acknowledged the increase in reports of missing children in the area, confessed to stealing three children from the area.

Miriam, who has been remanded at the Mlolongo Police Station, is anticipated to provide additional information on the syndicate’s operations and assist in locating some of the missing children in the area.

Two months prior, another suspect, Christine Masika, was arrested in Kasarani for attempting to sell a 5-day-old infant to detectives for Ksh.400,000.

Masika is being held at Lang’ata Women’s Prison Remand at present.
