Shifts in Azimio la Umoja’s Succession Dynamics: Raila Ally Reveals Pre-2022 Agreement Intricacies

The dynamics of succession within Azimio la Umoja have shifted following Professor Makau Mutua’s disclosure of the intricacies surrounding the pre-2022 election coalition agreement.

In a statement, the associate of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who acted as the spokesperson and led the Secretariat’s think tank during the 2022 elections, explained that the arrangement included the provision for a deputy party leader position, yet no individual was selected for this role.

He emphasized that there is no stipulation indicating that Martha Karua, the leader of Narc Kenya, would assume Raila’s position if he were elected as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

“The Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Deed of Agreement provides for a deputy party leader, but one was never chosen, or designated. The position is vacant.

“Nor is there any provision that Azimio’s running mate in the 2022 elections would be deputy party leader,” he stated.

Mutua responded to Karua’s comments during her interview with the Daily Nation on April 11th. Karua claimed that she would be next in line if Raila relocated to Addis Ababa.

In the interview, the leader of the Narc Kenya party also criticized Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, asserting that she was better suited to assume leadership of the opposition coalition party.

“If I’m the deputy, is that a question? Even in small organizations like a school, when the headmaster goes to a meeting in Nairobi, who acts? It is the deputy,”

“If we are unable to follow simple basic rules, then something is very wrong with us,” she stated during the interview.

Recently, Kalonzo and Karua have engaged in a public exchange criticizing each other’s approaches to surpassing Raila.

Kalonzo has specifically voiced disapproval of Karua’s involvement with a group centered on addressing concerns within the Mt Kenya region, labeling it as a Kamwene entity.

Other members of the outfit include Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni.

“I don’t want to pass judgment on that issue but have you heard of things like dead on arrival? This thing means individualism. It’s a terrible political philosophy. I would advise my friends to leave it and we stick together in Azimio,” Kalonzo stated during a past interview.

In the meantime, Raila has urged leaders, particularly those within his party, to refrain from deliberating on succession politics and instead prioritize the cohesion of their faction and address the challenges affecting Kenyans.

In the ODM party, there’s a rift between deputy leaders Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya regarding who should assume leadership of the party.
