Shakahola Death Toll Climbs to 303: 19 Additional Bodies Unearthed by Detectives
In the ongoing exhumation operations within Shakahola forest, detectives uncovered an additional 19 bodies on Tuesday.
This marked the highest number of bodies unearthed since the commencement of the third phase of the operation, bringing the total death toll from the starvation cult to 303 individuals.
Regrettably, no rescues were made on Tuesday, as the second week of excavating mass graves in the 325-hectare (800-acre) bushland of Shakahola forest progressed.
The primary cause of death among the victims appears to be starvation; however, autopsies conducted by government officials revealed that some individuals, including children, suffered from other forms of violence such as strangulation, beatings, or suffocation.
These distressing findings have added a further layer of tragedy to the already gruesome situation.
According to police records, a total of 95 individuals have been successfully rescued from the forest, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the overwhelming loss.

Investigators strongly believe that the majority of the recovered bodies belong to a former taxi driver named Paul Nthenge Mackenzie, who later assumed the role of a preacher.
Mackenzie has been accused of actively inciting the victims to starve themselves to death, promising that this extreme measure would facilitate their encounter with Jesus.
