The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), Kenya’s top labor union, is under fire after shocking whistleblower claims surfaced. Allegations of corruption, sexual harassment, and unfair treatment of employees have put COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli in the spotlight.
Explosive Whistleblower Revelations
The accusations came to light through blogger Cyprian Nyakundi, who shared an anonymous employee’s detailed account on social media on March 22, 2025. The whistleblower described a toxic work environment where salaries are delayed for months while top officials enjoy frequent trips abroad.
“The bosses are traveling as normal staff struggle with late payments, low salaries, and unfair promotions,” the employee wrote.
Worse still, those who speak up reportedly face immediate dismissal. The whistleblower listed former employees—Irine, Selina, Jackline, Nnamdi, and Mike—who were allegedly fired for questioning workplace injustices.
Suspicious SACCO Deductions and Sexual Harassment Claims
The informant also raised concerns about a mysterious SACCO (Savings and Credit Cooperative) that deducts money from employees’ salaries without clear information on its management or purpose.
“We are over-deducted on things we don’t understand. We take home almost nothing,” the whistleblower lamented.
Perhaps the most disturbing claim is that young female interns are victims of sexual harassment. The whistleblower alleged that interns are forced into inappropriate relationships with senior officials or risk losing their jobs.
“Young girls coming in for internship are being harassed. Those who refuse advances are terminated,” the source revealed.
One particular case involved an intern who was fired after rejecting the advances of a senior official. Another employee, Mike, was allegedly dismissed for uncovering payroll fraud.
Additionally, the whistleblower mentioned an unnamed boss with a sexual harassment case in Brussels, who was quickly brought back to Nairobi to avoid further investigation.
Francis Atwoli Responds
Shortly after the allegations surfaced, COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli strongly denied the claims, calling them “defamatory” and aimed at damaging the union’s reputation.
He insisted that salaries are always paid on time except in one case, where an employee was fired for tampering with payroll records. Atwoli also refuted the wrongful dismissal claims, stating that all former employees had received their final dues.
Regarding sexual harassment, Atwoli emphasized that COTU has a strict “zero-tolerance policy” and a safeguarding system in place. “No serving officer or official of COTU is facing any sexual harassment allegations,” he declared.
Public Reaction and Calls for Investigation
Despite Atwoli’s rebuttal, the allegations have sparked public outrage. Social media users have called for independent investigations, with some claiming that COTU has long been plagued by corruption and misconduct.
One user wrote, “The sexual harassment claims at COTU are not new. The place is rotten, and Atwoli is the biggest problem.”
Another suggested that Atwoli should step down due to the serious accusations.
The whistleblower urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to step in. “Many employees are scared to speak up, but they will cooperate if authorities investigate,” they stated.
