Senator Sifuna Slams Ruto’s Allies Over Fiery Speeches in Bungoma

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has expressed deep concern and surprise over remarks made by President William Rutoโ€™s allies during the burial of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula’s mother in Kabuchai, Bungoma County.

Sifuna, speaking on January 3, noted that the content of these speeches indicated potential problems for Ruto if he relied on the advice of such individuals.

In his statement, Sifuna said, “I am shocked by the speeches I heard here in Bungoma County. If these are the people guiding Ruto, then he is in more trouble than he realizes. Freedom of speech cannot be restricted beyond what is outlined in Article 33 of the Constitution.”

He criticized the statements as not only unconstitutional but also reflective of poor governance policies hurting Kenyans.

He went on to dismiss references to the Computer Misuse law mentioned by some leaders, calling it unconstitutional and irrelevant to the real issues affecting the country.

According to Sifuna, social media is not the problem; rather, it is the government’s policies that continue to make life difficult for Kenyans. He described the speeches as setting a negative tone for the new year.

At the same event, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi spoke out against unchecked criticism of the government.

While acknowledging the right to criticize, Kingi stressed that there are boundaries to such freedoms.

He argued that personal attacks against government officials should not be tolerated and urged law enforcement to take action against individuals crossing those lines.

He also emphasized the need for discipline, saying laws like the Computer Misuse Act could help enforce proper conduct.

Tensions rose during the burial when Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah clashed over abductions reported in the country.

Ichung’wah accused Natembeya of incitement and challenged him to provide any information he might have about abductors to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

He criticized Natembeyaโ€™s political approach, labeling it divisive and harmful to national unity, while calling for accountability on the issue of abductions.
