Senator Mandago’s Assistant Sneaks Out of The Country

Wednesday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) disclosed that a Jackson Mandago Finland Scholarship scandal-related official fled the country after investigations began.

The statement was made hours after former governor and senator Mandago was arrested at his residence in Eldoret. The other three suspects were selected separately as pressure mounts to hold accountable the top officials who stole Ksh1 billion from parents through a fraudulent scholarship scheme.

“It is believed that a fourth suspect, Joseph Maritim, fled the country during the height of the investigation,” the DCI said in a statement.

According to the DCI, arrest warrants were issued after the suspects failed to appear in court, which resulted in hours of high-speed pursuit and the detention of three suspects.

Mandago was arrested after he indicated that he had conferred with the affected families and was working on a plan to return the sums of money that were used to line the pockets of corrupt county officials and aides.

“Earlier, the trio failed to appear in court to face charges of conspiracy to commit a felony and abuse of office, among others, resulting in the issuance of an arrest warrant for their immediate capture,” the DCI noted.

It has come to light that some county officials handled enormous quantities of money between April and September of last year, during the country’s heated election campaign.

According to the parents, county officials devised a plan to send their children abroad to study, requiring them to contribute a portion of the cost while promising to cover the remainder.

The county failed to pay tuition and housing costs as agreed upon, leaving students to fend for themselves months after the program’s launch.

Some students were compelled to drop out and return to their home county with nothing, with one reportedly taking his own life as a result of the suffering.

The parents’ efforts to obtain justice were met with threats, which resulted in the recent contentious meeting with county officials and the current investigations.

President William Ruto instructed the officials on Wednesday to return the money and bear their own cross.
