Senate Speaker Kicks Out Cherargei for Disorderly Conduct

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi expelled Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei from the chamber after accusing him of disruptive conduct.

Senators were discussing the formation and composition of the National Dialogue team, led by Kimani Ichung’wah, National Assembly Majority Leader, and Kalonzo Musyoka, Wiper’s co-leader and Azimio co-principal. Cheragei was barred from attending the remaining Tuesday sessions.

Tensions escalated in the Senate after Cherargei disobeyed Kingi’s order to assume his seat. During an acrimonious debate, Senator Steward Madzayo of Kilifi had referred to him as a child.

In his defense, Cherargei demanded a retraction, contending that he was extremely offended by what he believed to be maliciously spread animosity. Thus, he continues to stand contrary to Kingi’s directive.

The Senator had been assured by Kingi that he would address his concern, but Kingi’s assurances fell on deaf ears.

“Senator Cheragei, please take your seat, or I will declare you out of order and remove you from the meeting. I will address your concerns,” declared the speaker.

After Cheragei failed to take his seat, Speaker Kingi commanded the Sergeant at Arms to use the necessary force to remove him from the chambers.
Following the orders of the Speaker, three sergeants-at-arm escorted Cherargei out of the chambers.

Consequently, Kingi ordered Senator Madzayo to retract his remarks and apologize to his colleagues for using unparliamentary language.

“Mister Speaker I apologize for the language I used towards Senator Cheragei. Madzayo apologized for using the terms unintentionally and withdrew them.

Senators resumed debate and approved the formation of the dialogue committee following the interruption of the session.

Kingi approved the formation of a 10-member committee comprised equally of opposition and government representatives. This includes National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi (ODM), DAP Party Leader Eugene Wamalwa, Nyamira Senator Okon’go Omogeni (ODM), and Azimio-representing Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi (ODM).

The ruling coalition, Kenya Kwanza, selected Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot (UDA), Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire (UDA), EALA MP Hassan Omar (UDA), and Bungoma Woman Representative Catherine Wambilianga (FORD-K).

The committee was sanctioned by Parliament so that its legality could not be challenged in court.
