The Senate has chosen a special 11-member committee to investigate the impeachment of the beleaguered Deputy Governor of Siaya, William Oduol.

This comes after Senate Speaker Amason Kingi acknowledged receiving a letter from his counterpart in the Siaya County Assembly, George Okode, dated June 10, 2023, informing him of the House’s resolution to remove Mr. Oduol from office.

The 11 Senators chosen to investigate the removal are as follows: William Kipkemoi Kisang’ (Elgeyo Marakwet), Abass Sheikh Mohamed (Wajir), Mwenda Gataya Mo Fire (Tharaka Nithi), Tabitha Mutinda Munene (Nominated), and Raphael Chimera Mwinzagu (Nominated).

Also appointed were Miraj Abdullahi Abdulrahman (Nominated), Erick Okong’o Omogeni (Nyamira), Catherine Mumma (Nominated), Daniel Maanzo (Makueni), Betty Batuli Montet (Nominated), and Richard Onyonka (Kisii).

Speaker Kingi instructed the committee to report back to the Senate within ten days and present its findings regarding the veracity of the allegations against Mr. Oduol that led to his removal.

Mr. Oduol was impeached on June 8, 2023, after 42 Siaya MCAs unanimously adopted the report of a special committee established to investigate the grounds for which an impeachment motion was filed against him on June 29, 2023.

The motion for impeachment was introduced by East Asembo Ward MCA Gordon Onguru, who accused the Deputy Governor of, among other things, gross violations of the Constitution, abuse of office, and misuse of public resources.

In a report submitted to the Siaya County Assembly by its chairman, Yimbo East Ward MCA Francis Otiato, the special committee found the allegations to be credible and recommended the dismissal of the DG.

During the deliberations on the report, Siaya MCAs supported Mr. Oduol’s removal one after the other, accusing him of being a dishonest leader who only sought to advance his interests.

They stated that the differences between Mr. Oduol and his boss, Governor James Orengo, had become irreconcilable to the point that they could no longer work together, thus necessitating his dismissal to allow the county chief to provide adequate services to the people.
