Secret Involvement: Raila’s Influence in Siaya Deputy Governor Oduol’s Ouster Attempt Revealed

Phone calls from Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leaders and a slew of secret meetings in Nairobi and Siaya before a county assembly special sitting appear to have sealed the fate of Siaya Deputy Governor William Oduol, leading to his impending removal.

Raila Odinga, leader of the ODM, reportedly expressed his displeasure with the negative press his home county has been receiving as a result of the conflict between Mr. Oduol and Governor James Orengo.

The allegations of corruption exacerbated the situation, prompting Mr. Odinga’s silent but firm intervention.

On Friday of last week, Mr. Orengo and Mr. Odinga met at the county liaison offices in Nairobi to put the plan into motion.

The duel between Oduol and Orengo was prominently discussed alongside a proposal that Mr. Odinga meets with MCAs, which was ultimately rejected.

A second meeting with Siaya leaders sealed Mr. Oduol’s fate.

“We have only one leader, and that is Raila Odinga; we respect and obey his every command. Assembly Speaker George Okode made the following pledge: “I assure you that the assembly will defend the devolution for which you fought so hard.”

Mr. Odinga’s visit to Siaya after the assembly rejected Mr. Oduol’s corruption allegations and a notice of motion to impeach him also spoke volumes.

Mr. Odinga traveled to Alego Usonga’s Muhondo grounds, where he visited flood victims and distributed relief food.

Mr. Orengo, Busia Governor Paul Otuoma, National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, and Budalang’i Member of Parliament Raphael Wanjala accompanied him.

Otuoma stated, “You know when your neighbor’s house is on fire, you help put it out, and that is why I have offered to sit the two down and have a conversation, but everyone should stick to his lane, role, and place.”

Mr. Orengo stated that he would not be intimidated, stating, “I have fought larger battles in my life, including those that brought down some powerful political figures. This is a game I’m too familiar with, but I’m concentrating on developing Siaya.”

Mr. Wandayi cautioned Mr. Oduol, telling him to conform or resign.

    Special sitting

On Monday, the county assembly will hold a second special session during which East Asembo MCA Gordon Onguru will formally introduce the impeachment motion. The motion is so important that MCAs had to cut short their recess to vote on it.

The ward representatives were scheduled to go on a working tour to Mombasa tomorrow, but this was postponed so they could discuss the impeachment motion.

Mr. Wandayi accused President William Ruto of meddling with ODM-affiliated counties. In Nyadorera, where Mr. Odinga was distributing food aid to flood victims, he was speaking.

“President Ruto and his associates are attempting to sow discord by interfering in the affairs of counties governed by ODM governors. Mr. Wandayi stated that they had attempted to sow confusion in the Coast region, Turkana, and Nyanza.

The lawmaker attributed the conflict between Mr. Orengo and Mr. Oduol to the Kenya Kwanza administration’s interference.

“I would like to thank the people of Siaya for their perseverance. Mr. Wandayi said, “We have seen Kenya Kwanza agents distributing free food in an attempt to sway them, but they have not been successful.”

He stated that Dr. Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance would be unsuccessful in recruiting Siaya residents to the party.

We recognize only one political party in this region, and that is the ODM party. We are aware that some leaders have visited Siaya and other regions in Nyanza under the guise of distributing food aid, but they are secretly registering people to join UDA, he claimed.
