Sakaja Urges Swift Resolution to Azimio vs Kenya Kwanza Standoff

The Governor of Nairobi, Johnson Sakaja, has called for an immediate resolution of the Azimio Kenya Kwanza dispute.
Sakaja was speaking at the PCEA Umoja church, where he and COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli had attended service.

“We want peace in Nairobi, we are one big family… ona vile Nairobi tuko, tuko na MCAs wa Kenya Kwanza, MCAs wa Azimio, and we are working together,” Sakaja told the congregants.

“I am confident that even at the national level, everyone desires cooperation and peace,”

The county administrator of Nairobi then assured the city’s residents of their safety should the anti-government demonstrations continue.

Sakaja added, “We will ensure that your lives and property are safe.”

Meanwhile, Adamson Bungei, commander of the Nairobi Regional Police, has stated that opposition demonstrations will not be permitted in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

Commander Bungei stated on Sunday that despite Azimio’s announcement that they will take to the streets on Tuesday, they will not be permitted to demonstrate because they have not shown goodwill in previous protests.

According to Commander Bungei. Azimio did not meet the requirements of Section 37 of the Constitution. And Section 5 of the Public Order Act for peaceful protests.

Bungei asserts that Azimio violated Section 5 of the Public Order Act, which permits unarmed and peaceful demonstrations.

“As much as article 37 allows you (to protest), subsection 5 of the same article allows the police to regulate the same procession,” he explained.

The Azimio coalition has called for a resumption of anti-government protests on Tuesday, May 2. Following the collapse of bipartisan talks last week.

Members of the bipartisan committee disagreed on the inclusion of MP Keynan. And his Pokot South counterpart David Pkosing. A matter they said must be resolved before formal business. Including the establishment of the committee’s terms of reference, can begin.

Azimio leaders accused their Kenya Kwanza counterparts of deceit, insisting that Keynan’s inclusion in the Kenya Kwanza dialogue team was illegal because he was elected on an Azimio-affiliated Jubilee ticket.

Kenya Kwanza, however, stated that MP Pkosing’s party, KUP, was part of the ruling coalition.
