Sakaja Takes Charge After Devastating Nairobi Fire Destroys Millions
Sunday, June 11, Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson visited Toi Market shortly after a fire gutted the establishment and destroyed property worth millions of Shillings.
Speaking to merchants at the market, Sakaja pledged to assist with the reconstruction of improved stores through the donation of necessary materials.
The governor assured the merchants that the county government will conduct a technical assessment of the extent of the damage and begin the process of rebuilding it within the week.
“Once the evaluation is complete, the county government will rebuild the market with more space for emergency vehicles to access the area,” he guaranteed.
In addition, he pledged to donate his funds to purchase and distribute iron sheets and food to assist those affected by the fire.
On Saturday, June 10, an unforeseen fire tragedy impacted approximately 2,500 merchants, according to the Governor of Nairobi County.
“These merchants eke out a living and can provide for their families through their small businesses at Toi Market. In the interim, we have arranged for food and material aid,” the governor said.
The county administrator added that the county was in the process of decentralizing fire services and that the city was acquiring additional fire engine trucks.

Therefore, he instructed the Planning Department to map and survey the informal settlements to provide access routes in the event of fire outbreaks.
Simultaneously, Sakaja stated that he had invited experts to investigate the fire disasters in the city to provide long-term solutions to prevent future occurrences.
Sakaja stated, “I want to assure you that my administration will investigate the incident to determine the cause and develop long-term solutions.”
Previous Fire Outbreaks
A fire broke out at Gikomba market in Nairobi on June 28, 2018, resulting in at least one death and seven injuries.
The fire, which is believed to have originated in a lumber yard, quickly spread to the market, destroying millions of dollars worth of merchandise.
Another fire broke out at Nairobi’s Kariokor market on March 15, 2017, destroying property worth millions of shillings. The fire started in a food kiosk and quickly spread throughout the market, destroying several stalls.
Repeated fires have caused widespread destruction and loss of life, highlighting the need for improved fire safety measures in the city.
The informal nature of many Nairobi markets makes them especially susceptible to fires, as they are frequently constructed of combustible materials and lack adequate fire safety measures.
The Nairobi County Government has taken some measures to combat the problem of market fires, including enacting stricter fire safety regulations and providing training on fire safety to market vendors.
