Sakaja Faces Lawsuit Over Construction of Night Club Inside Uhuru Park Comments
A coalition that includes the Green Belt Movement, founded by the late Professor Wangari Mathaai, and the Law Society of Kenya warned on Thursday, April 18, that they plan to take legal action against Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
This comes after the governor’s contentious remarks regarding the commercialization of the renovated Uhuru Park.
The groups claim that the commercialization of Uhuru Park would greatly impact its vast green areas.
Consequently, the group insisted that Sakaja promptly retract his comment about building a nightclub within the renowned park.
“We demand that this be done not any later than Friday, April 19 2024 6 pm,” read part of the statement.

Sakaja was instructed to hand in a report on the public participation that took place before the announcement. The report must be submitted within 48 hours of the letter’s submission date.
“My clients are willing to indulge the County not more than three days in respect to availing of documents,” the groups stated.
The groups stated that if the governor does not comply with the aforementioned demands, they will file a lawsuit on behalf of Nairobi’s residents.
The payment request emerged just a few hours after the governor pledged to create a contemporary nightclub within Uhuru Park.
During the official transfer of Uhuru Park on Thursday, April 18, Sakaja mentioned that the Nairobi County Government would install a Ksh156 million dancing fountain and make other enhancements within the park.
“We are going to issue tenders for business facilities that are here. We have restaurants, such as African restaurants. There is a nightclub that is going to be here,” Sakaja stated.
“You can come here and scream the way you want. We do not want noise in the estates. That tendering will be done in a very transparent way,” he added.
