Sakaja Announces Free Parking for All Private Cars in Nairobi on Saturdays
The Nairobi County Government has declared complimentary parking for private vehicles every Saturday.
Governor Johnson Sakaja stated on Saturday, stating that the directive is effective immediately and will remain in place until June 2024, coinciding with the commencement of the next fiscal year.
In implementing the directive, Charles Kerich, the Chief Executive Committee Member for Finance and Economic Planning in Nairobi County, formally published the notice.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 5 (2) (a) of the Nairobi City County Tax Waivers Administration Act, 2013, the County Executive Committee Member for Finance and Economic Planning in concurrence with the Governor, Nairobi City County, waives parking fees for all private motorist in Nairobi on Saturdays until June 30, 2024,” read the notice in part.
Before, individuals driving private vehicles could only avail of complimentary parking in the Central Business District (CBD) on Saturdays and Sundays.
However, drivers who parked near mosques were also able to benefit from complimentary parking on Fridays. This complimentary parking policy, in place every Friday from 12 noon to 2 pm, was implemented in April 2023.

At that moment, Sakaja highlighted that the decision was intended to enable the Muslim community to participate in prayers without any hindrance.
“We will allow our brothers and sisters attending prayer services to do so freely. No clamping of vehicles at that time,” he stated.
In the meantime, inhabitants of the city were cautioned to remain vigilant due to the rise of dishonest individuals preying on Nairobians who make payments for various services, including parking fees.
As per the county government’s directive, all transactions must be conducted electronically using the NairobiPay system, and cash payments are not accepted.
“I would like to inform Nairobians that we do not accept any cash payment for our services.
“In fact, if any of my revenue team members ask for payment in cash or purports to be able to assist outside of the system that we have put in place for Revenue collection please report them to 020 7247047 or send an email to governor@nairobi.go.ke and we will take immediate action,” the governor stated.
