Rwandan Driver Recounts Fatal Londiani Junction Accident
Gilbert Ntuyemungu, a Rwandan national of 52 years old who was driving the truck that caused the fatal accident at Londiani junction on June 30th, recounted his recollection of the incident.
After regaining consciousness in the hospital on Monday, July 3, and speaking to the press, Ntuyemungu recalled driving downhill at the Malaba junction when his brakes failed.
The weight of the cement he was transporting to Uganda prevented him from regaining control of the speeding truck, according to his account.
As the truck descended the road, the driver recalls hearing screams. He added that the impact of the truck as it crushed was the last thing he remembered about the events.
“The truck lost its brakes and descended steeply. I was with my turn boy, but I have no idea where he is currently.
“We were at the intersection of Malaba.” All I remember is unsuccessfully attempting to apply the brakes. Then I heard people screaming and others attempting to flee the road,” he explained.
In addition, the driver recalled spending two days at the Nakuru-Simba Cement Factory awaiting the loading of the truck with cement destined for transport to Uganda via Busia.

The accident left the father of two with multiple injuries to his head, legs, and back, and he lost all of his belongings.
He added that his family was unaware of his involvement in the incident because he was unable to contact them by telephone.
Since 1997, Ntuyemungu has been a truck driver and has traveled the Nakuru, Kericho-Londiani route frequently.
Saturday, July 1st, witness statements revealed that the driver and turn boy had parked the vehicle on the side of the road to make repairs before the truck began moving downslope.
The driver was observed jumping into the moving truck to slow it down before it collided with other vehicles and businesses at the intersection.
To apprehend traffic offenders, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen ordered the National Safety and Transport Authority (NTSA) on July 1 to install speed detection cameras in the area.
On the other hand, police officers have been instructed to intensify their crackdown on all roads and apprehend drivers who violate traffic laws.
