Rwanda Recalls a Drug Manufactured in Kikuyu, Kenya
The Rwanda Food Drugs Authority (RFDA) declared on Wednesday, January 3, that it was initiating a recall of a medication produced in Kikuyu, Kenya.
In an announcement, RFDA instructed the recall of specific batches of Fluconazole 200mg tablets that were brought into the country from Kenya.
This came after a prior alert issued by the Authority, notifying the Kenyan manufacturer about the discoloration observed in the Fluconazole 200mg tablets.
As per RFDA, upon arrival in the country, four large quantities of pink Fluconazole 200mg tablets displayed a white discoloration shortly after being stored, despite their brief time on the shelf.
“Rwanda FDA instructs all importers, central medical stores, wholesalers, RMS branches, retailers, Public and Private Health Facilities to stop the distribution of the above-mentioned batches of fluconazole 200mg tablets and return them to their suppliers for proper management,” the recall statement read in part.
Additionally, the RFDA asked importers and drug suppliers to notify them within 10 days starting from the recall date.
Rwandan health officials and authorities aim to inquire with importers and suppliers about the amounts of fluconazole 200mg tablets that have been distributed.
This will allow President Paul Kagame’s administration to determine the negative impact the drug has caused on the people of Rwanda.

Furthermore, the Health Ministry will receive reports from importers and suppliers regarding the quantities that have been returned and the remaining inventory available.
At the moment this was written, the Kenyan Health Ministry had not announced whether they would recall the drug from hospitals and pharmacies in Kenya.
Additionally, there were no indications of the pink tablet showing any white discoloration within the Kenyan market.
In February 2020, Rwanda prohibited the sale of Zerocin, a 200 mg/5ml azithromycin dry suspension produced in Kenya, due to numerous grievances reported by its users.
Nevertheless, it’s a typical practice for nations worldwide to withdraw products from circulation to safeguard their domestic consumers. In August of the previous year, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall for more than 100,000 pairs of baby jeans manufactured in Kenya due to the presence of metal snaps that posed potential harm to infants.
