Ruto’s Trio of Promises: Inspired by Mashemeji Derby with Raila

President William Ruto made three important football-related promises to Kenyans on Sunday, May 14.

This occurred after Ruto and Azimio Leader Raila Odinga observed a football match between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards at Nyayo Stadium.

Ruto addressed the players immediately after the Masemeji Derby, which AFC Leopards won 2-1, and revealed his government’s plan for reviving football in the country.

“Thank you for an amazing game. This is the best game I’ve seen in an extremely long time.

“We’ll alter this game. “I have already spoken with the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Ababu Namwamba, and we have agreed to ensure that we return Kenya to a time when football was successful,” he pledged.

The President also disclosed that Kenya will soon host the AFCON, the continental championship tournament.
“We want to host the African Cup of Nations (Afcon), and on Wednesday, May 17, I will be at the forefront of presenting the bid,” he said.

Ruto disclosed that he was collaborating with Namwamba to ensure full stadiums during football matches.

“We have a plan with Namwamba that will fill the stadiums every weekend with Kenyans from all walks of life who come to enjoy the game,” he said of his vision for the future of football in Kenya.

Ruto urged football fans who attended the game not to engage in violent or disorderly behavior.

Ruto and Raila shared a podium and exchanged pleasantries for the third time in the previous two days.

On Saturday, May 13, they met in Nyandarua for the burial of freedom fighter Mukami Kimathi. And later shared a podium at Kasarani Stadium for the Kipkeino Classic.

It took AFC Leopards, also known as Ingwe, seven years to dethrone Gor Mahia. Kenya’s most decorated club, with their rivalry dating back to the 1960s.
