Ruto’s High-Level Gathering: Obama’s Fixer and Billionaire Power Players

Saturday, May 6th, President William Ruto courted a group of prominent dignitaries to attract foreign investment into the country.

During his European tour, the President met with notable figures such as former U.S. Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina, who was widely regarded as former President Barack Obama’s fixer during his ten-year tenure.

Messina has advised over thirteen presidents and five prime ministers on five continents over the years.

Michael Scholey, CEO of Globeleq, participated in the high-stakes meeting. His company secured Ksh8.9 billion to construct a 35-megawatt power plant in Nakuru County in January 2023.

Michael Sort, an Australian engineer who is a stakeholder in the high grand falls dam in Tharaka Nithi County, was also present at the meeting.

Nick Candy, Paul Kempe, Severing Luyali, Onur Kizilot, and Afsher-Nejad, whose company United Green will invest Ksh51 billion in an agricultural project in Kisumu County, were among the other investors.

Ruto, accompanied by the Kenya High Commission to the United Kingdom, emphasized the significance of cultivating a robust framework that inspires investors’ confidence to participate in revolutionary projects in the country.

“Kenya is cultivating a vibrant, predictable, and stable institutional framework with irresistible incentives and guarantees to stimulate the influx of foreign investment into the country.

This will result in the introduction of world-class technologies and expertise, the creation of more jobs for young people, and the acceleration of economic growth. Ruto stated that he persuaded a group of British investors interested in investing in Kenya’s agriculture, energy, water, and housing sectors to visit London.

Ruto’s European tour began in London on Saturday, May 6, and he met King Willem-Alexander in the Netherlands on Sunday, May 7.

Then, at the invitation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he will tour Israel.

During the meetings, the primary focus will be on new methods of cooperation. And strengthening existing partnerships in key areas such as trade, investment, agriculture, and innovation, among others.

A week ago, the president met with over fourteen world leaders.

Among them was Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Fumio Kishida, the Prime Minister of Japan, Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations. And Krista Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Others included Amina Jane Mohammed. Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. Doreen Bogdan, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Melanie Joly, Canadian Foreign Minister, Benedict Oramah, President of the AfriExim Bank. And Alvaro Lario, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
