Ruto Vows to Pursue Defiant Kenya Kwanza MPs in Battle for Finance Bill 2023

President William Ruto now desires a public vote on the Finance Bill 2023 when it is introduced in Parliament this week, as he has threatened to take action against lawmakers who oppose the bill.

President Ruto, speaking at Leshuta in Narok West during a service of thanksgiving for Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, stated that the public vote will assist him in identifying MPs who are opposed to his development agenda for the Kenyan people.

“I heard a certain member of parliament say that he wants the vote on the bill to be public, and I fully support that. I want Kenyans to know that those who oppose eradicating unemployment and opposing the Finance Bill 2023 are enemies of development,” said President Ruto.

“Mimi nangoja kuona mbunge ambaye anaenda kupinga mpango tuko nao kwa hawa wananchi atasimama wapi” Because it is beneficial for Kenyans, I am pressuring legislators to pass the Finance Bill 2023 with the Housing Fund levy, said the president.

While advocating for the Housing Fund levy, Dr. Ruto stated that the program will generate millions of employment opportunities for Kenya’s youth.

President Ruto stated that the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) implementation remains crucial to reducing unemployment in the country.

He stated that the nation needed to make courageous decisions to achieve its development goals. The head of state, lamenting youth unemployment, stated that 5 million youths are unemployed, an increase of 800,000 per year.

Dr. Ruto stated, “We spend Sh650 billion annually to send our children to school, but they do not have jobs, so we need a comprehensive plan to leverage their expertise to drive the economy of our country.”

As part of the Finance Bill 2023, a proposal has been introduced that, if enacted, would require Kenyans to contribute 3% of their income, which would be matched by their employers, to enable them to own homes under the AHP.

Kenyans, who are already overburdened by taxes, have voiced widespread opposition to the proposal.

However, President Ruto asserts that the Finance Bill will stimulate the manufacturing sector of the economy, and he has labeled the opposition Azimio La Umoja One Kenya as liars and con artists.

According to him, opposition leaders generally support the Finance Bill but oppose it for the sake of opposition.

“During the election campaign, each of us (Azimio/Kenya Kwanza) had housing in our plans, so it baffles me that now that they are in government they are reversing course,” Ruto stated.

According to him, the housing fund will ensure that seven million Kenyans residing in informal settlements and slums receive homes. According to him, sixty years ago, Kenya was on par with countries such as Singapore, Korea, and Malaysia, but now their citizens live in decent housing.

President Ruto also urged the Maasai to avoid selling land for the sake of ostentation.

Ms. Tuya, the former Woman Representative of Narok, described her appointment as a privilege for the Maa community, especially pastoral women.

“I thank God for the privilege of serving in your government on your behalf. Ms. Tuya stated, “You have demonstrated to the world that your government is a class-breaker for the marginalized community.”

She added that her position would inspire Maasai girls, whose futures, according to her, have been cut short by backward cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage.

Members of Congress aligned with the Kenya Kwanza administration have also pledged to pass the Finance Bill when it arrives in the National Assembly this week.

Moses Wetangula, the speaker of the National Assembly, urged President Ruto to remain steadfast during the heated debate over the Finance Bill.

“You (President) have sworn to protect interests, so never be afraid to act and never act out of fear, and don’t let these few noises distract you,” Mr. Wetangula advised.

Governors Lati Lelelit (Samburu), Joseph ole Lenku (Kajiado), Susan Kihika (Nakuru), Cecily Mbarire (Embu), and Bomet’s Prof Hillary Barchok attended the event.
