Ruto Unveils Revolutionary Plan for Electric Matatus, Promises Affordable Fares
President William Ruto announced the development of a new transport system to reduce transportation costs on Thursday, June 1.
Ruto disclosed in his Madaraka Day address at Moi Stadium Embu that the government was in the final stages of launching an electric vehicle public transportation system.
As a result, operators will adopt electric buses to combat the high global cost of fuel.
“As international petroleum prices continue to skyrocket unaffordably, the price of fuel locally increases dramatically. Transport as a component of household budgets affects the cost of living, according to Ruto.
“We must free Kenyans from their reliance on transportation that is dependent on petroleum. This is why we are implementing an electric vehicle public transportation system that will significantly reduce transportation costs,” he added.
Ruto urged public service operators to adopt the new technology to save their businesses from the high operational costs caused by global fuel insecurity to advance his agenda.

The new plan will also be consistent with his economic transformation agenda and climate action initiatives, which he embraced after assuming power. In this regard, it is anticipated that the electric vehicle public transportation system will reduce emissions.
Matatu operators Embassava, Metro Trans, Super Metro, and Citi Hoppa have acquired electric bus fleets.
They launched the buses to operate on multiple routes, thereby sparing commuters of high fares and operating expenses.
Ruto added that operators of boda boda vehicles serving the public service vehicle sector would be required to acquire electric bikes. He insisted that the new move was essential for revitalizing the industry as a whole.
“With this intervention, owning and operating a boda boda will become more affordable, secure, and profitable,” Ruto said.
Some matatu operators had raised fares in response to an increase in fuel prices announced by the Energy and Petroleum Authority of Kenya.
In Nairobi, the price of gasoline rose to Ksh182.70, diesel to Ksh168.40, and kerosene to Ksh163.
In May, the price of Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene in Mombasa increased to Ksh179.86, Ksh165.57, and Ksh158.30, respectively.
