Ruto Shifts Amboseli National Park Ownership

On Tuesday, August 22, President William Ruto ordered Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza to transfer control of Amboseli National Park to the Kajiado County Government.

During the official opening of The Maa Cultural Festival at the Sekenani Gate in Maasai Mara, Narok County, the Head of State disclosed that the transfer was prompted by UNESCO recommendations and an executive order issued by former President Mwai Kibaki.

“I would like to state that UNESCO has recognized the Maa Community as the finest conservationists due to their culture that promotes human-wildlife coexistence. Even President Mwai Kibaki acknowledged your conservation abilities, and it was the Maasai community that donated land for the parks,” the President said, characterizing the decision as long overdue.

“While President Mwai Kibaki has directed that this matter be handled by the Kajiado County Government, I confirm that this will be the case.” This procedure will now be worked out between Tourism and the Kajiado County Government.”

Ruto elaborated on a conversation he had with Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku, confirming that the county chief had consented to allot more land from the devolved unit’s land for the national park.

It is anticipated that the expansion of Amboseli National Park’s land area will lead to an increase in the park’s wildlife population, thereby attracting a greater number of visitors.

This tourism boom has the potential to substantially increase the country’s desperately needed revenue.

Adding to the positive development, the President announced that revenue collected in all national parks in Kenya would be split equally between the national and county administrations, as the land was adjudicated on their behalf.

In response to applause from the Maa community, he stated, “I want to assure you that we will work with the counties to ensure that those who have donated their land to conservation efforts receive benefits.”

The Chief Executive cautioned the governors against misusing the funds they will receive from the parks. The President directed that the funds be used exclusively to assist local communities.

President William Ruto praised the counties of Samburu, Narok, and Kajiado for their concerted efforts to safeguard game reserves and parks.

“I support your efforts, such as the Masai Mara Management Plan, and I want to assure you that we will support the management of these parks for the benefit of the local communities,” he pledged.
