Ruto Reveals His First Ever Pay Working as Clerk and What He Bought

President William Ruto disclosed on Thursday that his initial daily wage was Ksh300 for his role as a clerk at Kapkong Farm.

Speaking to an audience during the ceremony to grant city status to Eldoret Municipality, Ruto shared that this new achievement for the municipality holds personal significance as many of his early experiences took place there.

He reminisced about his early days, noting that Paul Boit, the late owner of Kapkong Farm, hired him as a clerk and paid him Ksh300 shortly after he finished high school.

Ruto also mentioned that his first pair of shoes was purchased in Eldoret when he was about to start at Wareng High School in 1981.

“I vividly remember two significant moments. The first was in January 1981 when I arrived at Wareng High School, and my father, Daniel Kipruto, bought me my first pair of shoes in Eldoret. It was a memorable experience,” Ruto told the audience.

He also recalled another key moment from October 1984 when he worked as a clerk at Kapkong Farm for Paul Boit, earning Ksh300 for the first time.

The President, who is also known for his early days as a chicken hawker, shared that with his first earnings, he purchased his initial brand-new clothing in Eldoret Town, spending Ksh137.

“It was with my first wage that I bought a new pair of jeans for Ksh137 in Eldoret Town. It was a significant moment for me as it was the first time I walked into a shop and bought new jeans,” he added.

Reflecting on his past, Ruto, who once represented Eldoret North as an MP, admitted that during his initial campaign, he did not own a house.

He explained that his supporters were worried about his credibility due to his lack of a permanent residence, prompting him to rent a house from an athlete.

“Looking back, I recall that during my first parliamentary run, I didnโ€™t have a house, which raised concerns among my supporters about my reliability. They insisted I get a house, so I rented one from an athlete. My supporters even joked that I had bought the house along with its dogs to prove my commitment,” he said, eliciting laughter from the crowd.

Ruto served as MP for Eldoret North from 1997 to 2007 under the Kenya African National Union (KANU) banner and continued from 2007 to 2013 under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.
