Ruto Pledges: UDA Vows Female Running Mate in Upcoming Elections

On Thursday, President William Ruto suggested the potential for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to nominate a female candidate as a running mate in upcoming elections.

During the Women Governors’ Caucus G7 Strategy Summit in Nairobi, Ruto, without explicitly referencing the year 2027, stated that the initiative is in line with the UDA Party’s overarching goal to promote gender equality, reflecting the vision of the presidency.

While advocating for the adoption of the new approach, Ruto urged Cecily Mbarire, the UDA Chairperson, to delineate the upcoming alterations for future implementation.

“We must as a party lead in front and we must make it in the roots that when Rigathi Gachagua and myself when we reach the future and agree between ourselves,” Ruto stated.

“We must also agree that going forward, if a man is a candidate for president in our party, the woman must be the running mate. And if a woman is the candidate, then the man can be the running mate.”

Ruto stated that the modifications to the party would extend to various political positions, including gubernatorial seats.

Ruto underscored the importance of gender equality in party politics, clarifying that the intention was not to downplay the contributions of males in the political sphere.

Ruto urged leaders of other political parties to similarly embrace this initiative, aiming to enhance the involvement of women in the political landscape of Kenya.

“We must also cascade it down to the governors and we must be intentional about it,” the Head of State remarked.

“I know fellow party leaders in other parties will agree with us because I am sure the party leader in Wiper supported Wavinya, the party leader in ODM supported Gladys (Wanga) and all the other party leaders supported their women candidates.”

The initiation of the G7 strategy seeks to bring about a transformation in the involvement of women in political leadership within the country, to encourage numerous women to actively participate in elective politics.

Studies indicate that the active involvement of women in public and political arenas contributes to the strength of democracies, fosters political stability, supports sustainable development, and facilitates the desired economic advancement.
