Ruto & Kiir Ink Fiber Optic Deal Linking Nations
President William Ruto and his counterpart in South Sudan, Salva Kiir, have signed an agreement to construct a fiber optic conduit connecting the two countries.
Ruto revealed in a statement sent to newsrooms on Saturday, August 19, that both countries share the goal of establishing a fiber optic connection between Eldoret and Juba.
The project’s objective is to improve internet access for the citizens of both countries.
The extensive route of the fiber optic cable, which extends over 900 kilometers along the Eldoret-Juba Road, is consistent with Ruto’s vision of a digital superhighway that not only improves connectivity but also promotes adolescent employment.
Part of the statement read, “The two countries are pursuing joint infrastructure projects to enhance regional integration and boost trade.”
However, neither of the two executives disclosed the project’s cost or implementation schedule.
In addition to the fiber optic initiative, the two countries will collaborate on the 11-kilometer road from Nadapal to Nakodok.

In addition, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the timely completion of all remaining Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport Corridor (LAPSSET) initiatives.
“Kenya and South Sudan have also agreed to use the Africa Continental Free Trade Area Agreement to increase trade between the two countries,” the statement reads.
Ruto led mediation efforts on behalf of the leadership of the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) as the two engaged in discussions regarding the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
Kiir endorsed Ruto’s role as mediator, despite opposition from the Sudanese military under the command of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
Burhan’s faction has accused the Head of State of siding with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemeti.
During the meeting, Ruto was accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries Aden Duale (Defense), Eliud Owalo (Information and Communications Technology), and Zachary Njeru (Lands).
