Ruto Increases Height Limit for Buildings in Eastleigh to 30 Floors

President William Ruto announced that his government will remove the 12-floor limit on Eastleigh’s buildings and raise it to 30 floors.

He made this statement during an unplanned visit to Mathare, explaining that the higher cap is to increase housing availability for all citizens.

Improved housing conditions, he added, will help provide decent living conditions for slum dwellers and promote peaceful coexistence.

“As the Commander in Chief, I’ve decided that in Eastleigh, instead of limiting building heights to 12 floors, we will allow up to 30 floors so residents can access accommodation and live harmoniously,” Ruto stated.

Ruto also said the government will soon start the construction of 20,000 affordable houses in Mathare, Kiamaiko, and Kibra slums. Once completed, residents can own houses through a rent-to-buy plan, paying just Ksh3,000 per month.

“Before Friday, we will advertise the construction of 20,000 housing units in areas from Kibra to Kiamaiko and Mwiki, providing slum dwellers with homes in Kenya.”

“The new homes will allow citizens to pay Ksh3,000 monthly and enjoy housing with water, power, and sanitation facilities,” Ruto assured.

Ruto’s announcement supports Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s proposal in March to increase the height limit for residential buildings in Nairobi County to 75 floors.

At the time, Governor Sakaja noted that space limitations in the county required a review of building heights depending on the estates.

“When I discussed with the President about building upward, there was some concern about the impact on public infrastructure. Our development policy and zoning framework, presented to our assembly, allows for up to 75 floors in certain areas,” Sakaja said, addressing concerns about turning the city into a concrete jungle.

“I am pleased that the necessary infrastructure, such as sewerage, water, and traffic systems, is being implemented. We will make Nairobi a functioning city and restore its status as the jewel of this continent,” he added.
