Ruto Flies Out to Ethiopia for African Union Summit of Heads of State and Govt

President William Ruto will depart for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Friday afternoon, February 16, to attend the 37th African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government.

In a statement by State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, Ruto will address the Summit on ensuring access to education across the continent.

According to Mohamed, the Summit will provide solutions to curbing the crisis that has left over 98 million children in Africa without access to schooling.

“The summit’s theme is on building resilient education systems for Africa’s 21st-century human capital,” the statement read in part.

Further, in Ruto’s capacity as the chair of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), the head of state will deliver a report on the efforts made to mitigate the climate crisis across the continent.

This will involve the status of the Nairobi Declaration that was convened in September 2023.

“The document is Africa’s authoritative blueprint for addressing the climate change crisis and proposes reform of the global financial system as well as the Multilateral Development Banks.”

President Ruto will also participate in a mini-summit to discuss the security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) among other regional issues.

He will also hold meetings with fellow Heads of State and business leaders.

“We are building affordable houses across the country to not only create jobs and provide low-income earners with decent homes but also to reduce the continued fragmentation of arable land for settlement, posing a threat to our food security and production,” Ruto stated.

The president’s flight comes a day after Azimio leader Raila Odinga declared his interest in the AU chairmanship.

Raila will rely on votes from 55 member states to become the first leader from East Africa to take up the helm of the continental body.
