Ruto Announces 2024 as Last Year Kenya Will Import Maize

Sunday, President William Ruto announced that 2024 will be the final year that the government will import maize from abroad.

The Head of State stated during a church service in the ACK Diocese of Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, that the most recent policy is designed to protect farmers from an influx of imports.

”We donโ€™t want to import maize ever again. Next year will be the last year that we will be importing maize. From 2025, we wonโ€™t import even a single sack of maize. All the bags will be produced in Kenya,” stated Ruto.

President Ruto asserted that Kenyan farmers are capable of producing enough food for sale and domestic consumption.

”The Ksh 500 billion we are spending on importing food is a mistake and we cannot continue doing that,” stated Ruto.

President Ruto added that the government will provide farmers with access to dryers, which, according to him, will be more expedient than farmers drying their produce on the side of the road.

”You can dry your maize and we will give you storage at the Cereal Board for Ksh 10 per bag per month as you look for a market for your produce,” Ruto stated.

Ruto stated that the government would provide mobile dryers at a reduced cost so that producers could increase their agricultural output.

”We have bought 100 driers and you will distribute them across areas to help you dry your maize,” Ruto further stated.

Ruto issued a warning to fraudulent merchants who resell government-subsidized fertilizer at the same location.

He disclosed that several individuals have already been apprehended after being caught selling the products in various regions of the nation.

”There were some corrupt people who tried to jeopardize the process but I arrested and jailed them,” Ruto stated

”There was someone in Ziwa who tried to cheat and another one in Mosoriot but I arrested him and jailed him, so there is no room for cheating,” he added.
