Rongo Gold Site Closed by Police

Migori County Commissioner, David Gitonga, has issued a directive to shut down the Komire excavation point, located along the Kisii-Isebania highway, where significant gold deposits were recently discovered.

The decision to close the site was prompted by the influx of residents and artisanal miners who flocked to the area, causing disruptions to the ongoing road construction activities along the highway.

Commissioner Gitonga expressed concerns about the safety of the local population as the site had become a hub for illegal mining activities.

The sudden surge in mining operations posed risks to the community, and it was evident that the locals were now actively engaging in these unauthorized mining endeavors.

In light of these developments, Gitonga urged the residents to steer clear of the site until the national and county governments could come up with a sustainable and mutually beneficial solution for all parties involved.

The closure of the excavation point was deemed necessary to maintain public safety and prevent any further impediments to the highway construction project.

The discovery of gold deposits in the region triggered a rush of interest from locals and artisanal miners seeking to capitalize on the newfound potential for wealth.

However, the unregulated and uncontrolled mining activities had raised environmental and safety concerns, necessitating swift action by the authorities.

By ordering the closure, Commissioner Gitonga aimed to send a clear message that adherence to the law and safety standards was paramount.

He acknowledged the economic importance of the mining potential but emphasized that it should be harnessed in a legal and organized manner.

The commissioner also appealed to the responsible parties to find a viable resolution that would not only address the mining interests but also take into consideration the welfare of the local community and the progress of the highway construction project.

It was evident that an effective collaboration between the national and county governments would be crucial in finding a balanced approach that could unlock the economic benefits of the gold discovery while safeguarding the well-being of the residents.

In conclusion, the closure of the Komire excavation point was a decisive move by Migori County Commissioner David Gitonga to restore order and safety to the area.

The suspension of mining activities was necessary to pave the way for dialogue and strategic planning between the relevant authorities and stakeholders, with the ultimate goal of creating a win-win situation for everyone involved.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the gold reserves will be responsibly exploited for the greater benefit of the community and the region’s economic growth.
