Remotasks Website Suddenly Goes Offline Weeks After Ruto Praise
Numerous young individuals in Kenya, relying on the Remotasks platform for their income, are now forced to explore alternative avenues as the international remote tasks website has become unavailable in the country.
On the evening of Tuesday, March 12, a considerable number of platform workers circulated an email they claimed was sent by the company. The email stated the company’s decision to halt its operations in Kenya.
As per the communication received, the website intended to cease its operations on March 8 of this year, which is almost a week in the past.
“We are reaching out with an important announcement regarding Remotasks operations in your location. We are discontinuing operations in your current location effective March 8, 2024.

“As part of this change, you have been off-boarded from your current project,” read the email in part.
A spot check by Gossipa2z.com on the company’s website returned a blank page with the words, “Sorry, you have been blocked. You are unable to access remotasks.com.”
The occurrence follows closely on the heels of President William Ruto commending a Kenyan youth for using the platform to earn a monthly income of Ksh45,000, just a few weeks ago.
The national leader engaged with Brian Kipchumba, a college student earning over Ksh300,000 annually while inspecting ICT laboratories in January of this year.
“Here is my Remotasks account. I have been working online since December 26, 2023. The total amount of money I have earned is USD284 which is like Ksh45,000.
“My recent payout is USD172. That is per week,” Kipchumba told the President attracting applause from Ruto and his leaders.

The conversation I had with a worker in 2021 presented an alternative perspective, depicting a scenario characterized by early starts and late finishes.
The undisclosed source, preferring to remain anonymous, shared that they were assigned the responsibility of categorizing images depicting obstacles on highways. These images are utilized to instruct self-driving cars on the types of hindrances to steer clear of.
At first, the Agribusiness graduate expressed optimism about earning a substantial weekly income of approximately Ksh10,000 on favorable days. However, he frequently worried about the significant income fluctuations, which could plummet to as little as Ksh1,000 during challenging weeks.
“I have performed the tasks since 2019 September. The income you make varies. At first, the platform had good money but has since deteriorated. I used to spend 10 hours a day, 7 days a week working.
“I was forced into that line of work due to the high unemployment rate across the country,” stated the informant at the time.
