Rare Footage: Young Ruto Criticizes Kibaki’s Job Plan for Mama Mboga and Boda Boda

On Saturday, June 24, a video of a young President William Ruto (then a member of parliament). Criticizing the late President Mwai Kibaki’s plan to create 400,000 jobs for mama mboga and boda boda resurfaced.

Ruto vehemently rejected the plan for the thousand opportunities for mama mbogas in the video. Arguing that they were not legitimate employment opportunities.

In 2007, Ruto spoke at a campaign rally in Meru for Raila Odinga. Before their split, the two were members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

“Raila Odinga should serve the people as President. He is a citizen and patriot of Kenya. Kibaki promised that he would only be in power for five years. Ruto, a former member of the ODM’s defunct Pentagon, rallied the crowd, stating that Raila should be campaigning here.

He challenged Kibaki, urging him to outline a plan for the creation of the promised jobs.

“Alituambia ati kuna wamama wanauza mboga sokoni na vijana wa boda boda barabarani. Ati hiyo ni kazi imepatikana.

He claimed he would create these jobs),” Ruto mocked the President.

Instead of propagating a narrative about women selling vegetables, the head of state urged Kibaki to create better business opportunities for women.

He added, “We tell you (Kabaki) that you can also perform the tasks of women in the market and youth on boda boda.”

Ruto initially criticized Kibaki’s performance as president, but he later praised his leadership and drastic measures to improve the economy and create employment opportunities for Kenyans.

Ruto eulogized him in April 2022, stating, “He laid a solid foundation in education and infrastructure development, and he was the architect of our economy.”

Ruto sold the hustler narrative during the 2022 election campaign by promising to form a government centered on mama mboga and boda boda drivers.

In September 2022, he stated in Parliament, “Our promise to the small trader, mama mboga, and boda boda drivers is that we will create favorable measures for the business community.”

As a result of Ruto’s decision to raise taxes to generate revenue, the opposition argued that he had broken his promise to assist street vendors.

Additionally, the chief executive was accused of failing to reduce the cost of living. However, the President argued that he would create jobs through the Finance Bill of 2023.

He identified the Housing Fund as a significant initiative that would help him secure his legacy. In addition, the Hustler Fund was established to provide Kenyans with access to affordable digital loans.
