Raila Will Leave AU Job To Run For Presidency In 2027 – CS Kuria

Moses Kuria, the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management, has affirmed that Raila Odinga will remain a candidate in the 2027 elections, regardless of whether he secures the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

As per Kuria’s perspective, the opposition leader aims to secure the AUC top position as a means to stay engaged while anticipating a presidential competition in the 2027 General Election.

“Baba is filling time so for him to get something productive to do is good instead of wasting a good brain. He was not born to be chairman of AUC he was born to be a politician in national politics,” he said on Monday.

On Spice FM, Kuria asserted that if Mr. Odinga successfully secures the position, he will step down from the role and pass it on to another East African leader to fulfill the remaining four-year term.

“People who’ve got no bearing of history think that Baba is going anywhere. Baba is coming back. He will do two years,” Kuria noted.

“He is going to call it short and maybe give it to another East African to finish for him maybe Kikwete as he takes care of some urgent business.”

Kuria, nonetheless, emphasized his endorsement of Mr. Odinga’s candidacy for the AU position, highlighting its potential to enhance the economic strength of the region.

“I am supporting Raila Odinga to the AU so to have representation of people of the caliber of Raila Odinga in AU is paramount [and is] good for our politics, for East Africa and we’ll do anything possible to ensure that he gets that position.”

The position of AUC chairperson will become available next year since Chad’s Moussa Faki, the current officeholder, is scheduled to complete his two-term tenure.

Faki was initially chosen in 2017 and secured a reelection for a second term in 2021.

The chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) holds the highest position within the continental organization, serving as the Chief Executive Officer, legal representative of the AU, and the Chief Accounting Officer for the Commission.

The Assembly selects the Chairperson of the Commission through an election, and the chosen individual serves a term of four years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional term.

They are also not allowed to be politically active while in office.
