Raila Tells President Ruto To Stop Forcing Gov’t Projects On Kenyans

Raila Odinga, the leader of the One Kenya coalition party under the Azimio la Umoja umbrella, has strongly criticized President William Ruto, accusing him of utilizing government resources to promote his affordable housing initiative.

While addressing the audience in Mombasa on Saturday during the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party recruitment campaign in the area, Mr. Odinga pointed out that President Ruto’s conduct is in contradiction to the principles of the Constitution.

“Wewe unatoka kama serikali na kifua unasema mpende msipende…wakati wa mpende msipende ilikwenda…hiyo tulitoa,” he said.

Mr. Odinga additionally stated that the opposition does not object to the proposal. However, he emphasized that the government has not provided sufficient clarity regarding the implementation of the project, the beneficiaries, and the overall process.

The leader of the opposing party later encouraged President Ruto to commence discussions to address the deadlock.

“Affordable housing inatakikana lakini mpaka ifanywe na mpango watu waelewane hii mpango itafanywa namna gani, tutaanza wapi, tutamalizia wapi, nani atatoa pesa, nani atafaidika na pesa itatoka wapi,” he said.

Mr. Odinga, wrapping up his week-long visit to the Coast region on Saturday, also criticized the Changamwe demolitions, which have displaced numerous families and left them without shelter.

“Huwezi kubomoa manyumba ya watu bila kuwaonyesha wataenda wapi…kuna wazee, wamama wakongwe, watoto wachanga…hii ni unyama mtupu, tunalaani vikali,” said the ODM boss.

In Bungoma, Eugene Wamalwa, the leader of the DAP-K party, urged President Ruto to return all funds collected by the government through the housing levy, following a court suspension of its implementation.

“Ile pesa ulichukuwa kinyume na sheria tunataka hizo pesa zirudishiwe Wakenya mara moja,” said Wamalwa.
