Raila Stands Firm on Backing Adani Deal

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has stood firm in his decision to back the contentious multibillion-shilling partnership with Indiaโ€™s Adani Group, stating he has no regrets.

In an exclusive interview with Citizen TV, Odinga emphasized his belief in Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) as a pathway to Kenyaโ€™s economic growth. He argued that private investors are essential for national development, pointing to Adaniโ€™s strong track record as evidence of its suitability for the now-canceled projects.

โ€œThe government cannot fund development solely through taxationโ€”itโ€™s unsustainable,โ€ Odinga remarked. โ€œI have no regrets because I understand the realities at play.โ€

He dismissed allegations against Adani as being fueled by rival investors competing for the same Kenyan contracts. โ€œThe accusations were rooted in business rivalries and misconceptions, not factual wrongdoing,โ€ Odinga explained.

Adani Group had proposed a Ksh.260 billion plan to revamp Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) over 30 years and an additional Kshโ€”95 billion to modernize Kenyaโ€™s power transmission lines under a PPP framework. However, President William Ruto terminated the agreements on November 21 during his State of the Nation Address, citing credible findings from investigative agencies.

The cancellation followed accusations against Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani, who was charged by U.S. authorities for allegedly bribing the Indian government with Ksh.30 billion to secure solar energy contracts.

The deals faced intense public scrutiny, with critics warning they could open doors to corruption due to Adaniโ€™s tarnished reputation.

Two weeks after the termination, President Ruto shifted his stance, blaming Kenyans for halting the JKIA upgrade.

โ€œWhat benefit do you gain by opposing the construction of an airport in your country? Some of those protesting have never even stepped into an airport,โ€ Ruto stated on December 3 in Taita Taveta.

He reiterated that the airportโ€™s modernization was overdue and vowed the upgrade would still proceed.
