Raila Speaks Out on Ruto’s ODM Cabinet Nomination Picks

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has asserted that the ODM party has not engaged in any coalition arrangement with President William Ruto.

He noted in a statement that Ruto appointed four members from his party to the Cabinet.

Nonetheless, he emphasized that these appointments were not linked to any agreement between Ruto, his party, or Azimio la Umoja.

“I have taken note of President William Ruto’s announcement yesterday regarding the reconstitution of the cabinet to include four members from ODM.

“As articulated in our statement on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, neither the ODM Party nor Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has entered into any coalition agreement with President Ruto’s UDA party,” he stated.

Raila extended his best wishes to the nominated individuals, highlighting their competence and the positive impact they would have on the nation’s development.

The Cabinet nominees are Hassan Joho for Mining, Wycliffe Oparanya for Cooperatives, John Mbadi for Treasury, and Opiyo Wandayi for Energy.

It is worth noting that the ODM leader did not disclose whether Ruto sought his input before finalizing the nominations.

“We extend our best wishes to the nominees and trust that they will contribute positively to national development,” he added.

At the same time, he insisted that the government accelerate the national dialogue suggested by the President.

Raila emphasized that this dialogue would play a crucial role in tackling the concerns voiced by Kenyans during the demonstrations.

I’ve noted President William Ruto’s announcement from yesterday about reshaping the cabinet to incorporate four members from ODM.

In our statement released on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, we clarified that neither the ODM Party nor the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has formed a coalition agreement with President Ruto’s UDA party.

We had expected the development of specific terms of engagement addressing the issues we highlighted in our communications.

While we extend our best wishes to the nominees and trust that they will contribute positively to national development, we continue to advocate for a national engagement under the conditions we have previously outlined below:

1. Compensation to the families of the victims of extra-judicial executions and persons injured by the state since last year.

2. Release of all persons in custody and termination of all cases related to protests since last year.

3. Prosecution of policemen involved in shooting to kill or maim protestors. ODM remains steadfast in upholding its foundational principles of democracy, good governance, and social justice.

These principles shall at all times guide our actions and decisions as we strive for the betterment of our nation. We urge all stakeholders to remain committed to the ideals of unity and progress for the prosperity of all Kenyans.
