Raila Odinga’s Azimio Coalition Reveals Post-Finance Bill Plans

The coalition of former prime minister Raila Odinga, and Azimio, announced its next steps on Thursday, June 22, following the passage of the Finance Bill, 2023.

In a statement read by Narc Kenya Party Leader Martha Karua, the coalition informed Kenyans that it will hold a public engagement forum to discuss the Finance Bill 2023 and the national budget on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Kamkunji Grounds in Nairobi.

To debunk the tax increases, leaders of Azimio la Umoja, including Raila, Kalonzo Musyoka, and other financial experts, will attend the forum.

“We witnessed what occurs when a rogue and indifferent Chief Executive decides that his ego, fantasies, corruption, and cronies’ agenda are the only things that matter.

“We also learned the hard way that this illegitimate regime can disregard the people, their emotions, fears, circumstances, hopes, and aspirations to impose its agenda. Ruto and his Kenya Kwanza supporters accomplished this with the passage of the Finance Bill of 2023. Ignoring the desires of the majority of Kenyans heralds the beginning of an era of dictatorship. Kenyans beware,” Karua stated.

On the contentious Finance Bill, Azimio la Umoja stated that the public will have the opportunity to ask questions and express their opinions.

According to the coalition, the public forum is part of Azimio la Umoja’s efforts to engage with the public on key economic issues as it mulls a return to nationwide demonstrations.

“We extend our condolences to the millions of Kenyans who are struggling to accept the harsh reality. We are aware that many of you view this as a nightmare that will fade away.

“Unfortunately, it has arrived and will remain unless we act immediately. The Ruto regime ensured that the people’s desires were disregarded. As an alternative, he retained punitive taxes on fuel, housing, turnover, mobile money transfers, and salaries, among others, according to a portion of a statement by Azimio la Umoja.

The coalition reaffirmed that it would exert pressure on the current administration to ensure that the Finance Bill and national budget reflect Kenyans’ needs. This can be accomplished through legal action or mass protests.

Azimio la Umoja asserted that the Finance Bill 2023 will cause hyperinflation because food prices will skyrocket, thereby requiring vehement opposition.

“Where inflation has occurred, we must now prepare for hyperinflation. With yesterday’s approval of a slew of new taxes, we must anticipate that all of our remaining funds will vanish.

“We honor and salute every member of Congress who stood up for the people during these trying times. Believe Kenyans do too. We rejoice that, despite the regime’s assertion that not even a comma would be removed from the bill, our legislators were able to force the regime to accept not one, not two, but several amendments,” Karua joked.
