Raila Odinga Meets AUC Chair Moussa Faki Amid Intense Succession Battle
Opposition leader Raila Odinga held a meeting with AUC Chair Moussa Faki during the Africa Fertiliser and Soil Health Summit at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Thursday, May 9.
Raila is currently seeking support to take over from Faki as the next AUC chairperson, a goal he announced on Thursday, February 15.
A photo on Raila’s X account (previously Twitter) showed him greeting Faki, whose term is set to conclude in January 2025.
Who else was at the summit?
Several African heads of state attended the event, including Central African Republic president Faustin-Archange Touadéra, Malawi’s Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, Zambia’s Hakainde Hichilema, Zimbabwe’s Emmerson Mnangagwa, Namibia’s Nangolo Mbumba, and Burundi Prime Minister Gervais Ndirakobuca.
Kenya’s President William Ruto was also present at the summit.
Europe Diplomats support Raila’s AUC chair bid
On Thursday, April 25, Raila Odinga met with European diplomats in Nairobi to discuss global issues and his pursuit of the African Union Commission (AUC) chair position.
Raila also held separate meetings with Norway’s Ambassador to Kenya, Gunnar Andreas Holm, and Australia’s High Commissioner Jenny Da Rin at his Karen residence.
The two diplomats expressed support for Raila’s bid for AUC chairmanship and the importance of strengthening the African Union for the continent’s development.
Raila’s vision for Africa
On April 27, Raila outlined his plans for tackling Africa’s challenges if he becomes AUC chairperson.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Raila emphasized his aim to facilitate the free movement of people, goods, and services within Africa.
He discussed the continent’s transportation difficulties, pointing out the need to travel through Europe to access certain African regions.
Raila also hinted at eliminating multiple currencies and visas required to travel to other African nations.
