Raila Odinga Brushes Aside Calls for William Ruto’s Resignation: “Ruto goes, then what?”

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party leader Raila Odinga has opposed the ongoing push for President William Ruto’s resignation.

Speaking during the ODM Party Parliamentary Group meeting on Wednesday, July 17, the ODM leader warned that the ‘Ruto must go’ push might have dire consequences.

Why Raila Odinga is opposed to calls for Ruto’s resignation

According to Raila, those pushing for Ruto’s ouster might not be aware of the consequences of having him out of power.

“He pointed out that in Ruto’s absence, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will take over the government and continue implementing the bad laws formulated by the Kenya Kwanza administration. โ€œRuto goes, then what? He may go then Gachagua takes over [to continue] implementing bad policies. Ruto can also say โ€˜I am tired, let the [military] generals take over. Then the country begins to go through what Egypt went through after Tahrir Square. โ€˜Ruto must goโ€™ cannot be an end,โ€ Raila stated.

The ODM leader backed the dialogue called by Ruto, arguing that the country needs consultative talks to resolve the current crisis.

โ€œItโ€™s at times of crisis like this that a country needs to talk. We are not doing it to save Ruto. We are doing it to save Kenya. Generals donโ€™t have teargas. They donโ€™t have water cannons. They have bullets,” he added.

What did Raila say about William Ruto govt?

Meanwhile, the Azimio leader quashed allegations of striking a secret agreement with the Kenya Kwanza government.

In a statement on X, Raila said that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) never claimed to be collaborating with the government.

Raila further accused the media of fabricating the story of a handshake that has never occurred.

The opposition leader stated that he and the ODM party are advocating for a national convention to allow all Kenyans to express their views.
