Sunday, May 7th, the leader of the opposition party Azimo, Raila Odinga, cautioned Vice President Raila Odinga against politicizing the death of the widow of freedom fighter and Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi.

Raila stated, after paying respects to Mukami Kimathi’s widow, that her death was a blow to the entire nation.

It is the government’s responsibility to care for war heroes, he said, adding that this has been a long-standing concern.

“This is a government-solvable issue that has been postponed for a considerable amount of time.

The leader of Azimio stated, “I do not want anyone, including the vice president, to attempt to politicize this matter or score political points over a very very sad affair for the nation.”

In addition, he requested that the government organize a state funeral for Dedan Kimathi and other freedom fighters at Uhuru Gardens.

“I would like the state funeral for the late Maitu Mukami Kimathi to be held at Uhuru Gardens, where Mau Mau freedom fighters were tortured,” Raila continued.

Raila confirmed that he would be present at Mukami Kimathi’s funeral, noting that they were close friends and thus did not need an invitation.

“I cannot miss Mukami’s funeral because our relationship has been so close. There is no need to invite me because I will be there regardless.”

Mukami passed away on Thursday evening, May 4, 2013, while receiving treatment for breathing difficulties at a hospital in Nairobi.

During the struggle for independence, she was one of the Mau Mau freedom fighters incarcerated at Kamiti Maximum Prison.

During the Mau Mau rebellion, she played a pivotal role in planning successful tribal dances aimed at young men and women. The majority of men had taken refuge in the forest or detention camps at the time.
