Raila Calls for Kindiki’s Sondu Violence & Haiti Mission Probe

The Azimio La Umoja opposition coalition desires that Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki be summoned to Parliament to answer for the deadly confrontations that have erupted in the Sondu area on the Kericho-Kisumu border and the planned deployment of Kenyan security forces to Haiti.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Azimio leaders led by Raila Odinga questioned why the Interior CS has yet to comment on the Sondu clashes that have resulted in several deaths and dozens of injuries.

“How come the Interior minister is silent on this matter? He has not visited the sceneโ€ฆ This means that there is something the Government knows about the Sondu insecurity that Kenyans do not know,” said Odinga.

The Azimio coalition alleges that leaders and politicians from Kericho and the national government are responsible for the violence and anarchy in Sondu.

“We view these latest incidents in Sondu as part of a long, off and on history of violence instigated by politicians who have on numerous occasions incited the different communities against each local leader who has been implicated in these activities,” said Azimio in a statement read by DAP-K PArty leader Eugene Wamalwa.

In addition, Azimio asserts that Kericho county authorities are eager to claim Sondu town in the upcoming IEBC delimitation process.

“These leaders must abandon their expansionist tendency through which they are seeking to extend the boundary of Kericho County to claim Sondu town.”

“We are convinced that this violence is being sponsored by local politicians who have set their claiming part of Kisumu County during the envisaged boundary review,” added Azimio.

Concerning the plan to send Kenyan security officers to Haiti, the opposition coalition demands an explanation from the Interior CS as to why the government is failing to prioritize the security situation in the country and safeguard lives and property in Sondu, North Rift, North Eastern, and Lamu.

The Azimio leaders also query Kenya’s readiness for the deployment of security personnel to Haiti, which they refer to as a “high-risk mission.”

“Are our Police, most of whom speak neither French nor Creole and will find themselves in strange terrain, sufficiently prepared for this high-risk mission or Ruto is ready to sacrifice innocent Kenya blood for American dollars and international recognition?” posed the Opposition.

They added: “Ruto must stabilize and secure Kenya before thinking of sending our security people to what is clearly a Mission Impossible in a country we even had no diplomatic ties until about two weeks ago”

The coalition led by Raila Odinga asserts that the country is truly overpoliced and therefore cannot afford to export officers.

“As a country, we are actually under-policed. The recommended UN police-to-citizens ratio is 1 police officer for every 400 people. In Kenya, the police to people ratio stands at one officer for over 1000 people,” they said.
