Rachel Shebesh, Ex-Minister Shortlisted for Govt Plum Jobs
Former Nairobi Woman Representative Rachel Shebesh is among several notable figures being considered for a prominent government role.
Recently, Shebesh made headlines by participating in a panel discussion on women in politics, hosted by former news anchor Janet Mbugua. She has been shortlisted as one of 15 candidates for a position as a member of the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC).
For Shebesh, joining the NGEC represents a significant opportunity to advocate for women’s rights following her recent tenure as a Gender Chief Administrative Secretary panelist.
On October 17, Shebesh will compete for the position against Salome Aluoch Owuonda from Migori, Margaret Lyasi Lesuuda from Laikipia, Juliet Wanjiku Murimi from Kiambu, and Harun Maalim Hassan from Mandera. Notably, Shebesh is the only candidate from Nairobi.
Among her competitors is Florence Mutua, the former Busia woman representative, who secured her seat in 2013 and successfully retained it in 2017.
The selection panel will also interview other candidates on October 16, including Evans Toto Nyachieng’a from Kisii, Morris Kiwinda Mbondenyi from Taita Taveta, Michael Mbithuka Nzomo from Machakos, Rael Chebichii Lelei from Uasin Gishu, Margaret Kamonya Emonde from Vihiga, and Barako Elema Qatamur from Marsabit.
As stated by the selection panel, “The shortlisted applicants will be interviewed at the 11th Floor Boardroom, Harambee House, Harambee Avenue, Nairobi, at the designated date and time. Shortlisted applicants should arrive at least thirty minutes before their scheduled interview.”

Chairing the NGEC will be Linah Jebii Kilimo, who made history by winning the Marakwet East parliamentary seat during the Mwai Kibaki era in 2002, as recommended by Florence Nyole (Arch.), the Chairperson of the Selection Panel.
Jebii will face nine other candidates for the chairperson role, yet she is considered the frontrunner due to her extensive experience in various leadership roles.
Having served as a Cabinet Minister, Jebii’s most recent position was as a board member for ChildFund International. In 2013, she was appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta as the chair of the newly established Anti-Female Genital Board.
Other contenders for the chairperson position include former Isiolo Women Representative Rehema Dida Jaldesa, ex-Makueni deputy governor Adelina Mwau, and former nominated senator Mary Yiane Seneta.
Public participation in the hiring process is encouraged; individuals can submit information about any shortlisted applicants through affidavits to the Chairperson of the NGEC Selection Panel via email at selectionpanelngec2024@psyg.go.ke.
On August 29, President William Ruto urged Kenyans to apply for jobs in the NGEC and three other government agencies: the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), and the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ).
