Puzzle As Kenyan Flag Appears Upside Down at IGAD Meeting Attended by Ruto
Some Kenyans were confused when they noticed that a Kenyan flag was displayed in an inverted position during an Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) event that was attended by President William Ruto.
The unusual occurrence was initially observed in a sequence of images that Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale posted on Sunday. Additionally, the CS attended the meeting where this anomaly was identified.
“IGAD lauds President William Ruto for bringing two warring parties in Sudan to the table for political dialogue,” celebrated Duale alongside the photos.
Ideally, the preferred arrangement for the Kenyan flag involves positioning the Black color at the top and the green at the bottom. However, in the recent instance, the flag was displayed with the green color situated at the top instead.
As per the Kenyan Constitution, it remains uncertain whether diverging from the usual way of displaying the flag carries any particular significance, unlike the practice observed in other nations.
The National Flag, Emblems, and Names Act solely forbids unauthorized showcasing of the flag by individuals, yet it fails to specify the proper way to display the flag on clothing.
“No person shall display at any place or on any premises any flag or banner or permit any flag or banner to be so displayed, being, in either case, a flag or banner (other than a specified emblem) which is reputed to belong, or is held out by any authority as belonging, to the territory of Kenya or of any particular part thereof (other than the area of a local authority),” reads a section of the Constitution.

“Any person who contravenes subsection (1) of this section shall be guilty of an offense and liable to a fine not exceeding five thousand shillings or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or to both such fine and such imprisonment.”
The black hue symbolizes the populace, while red signifies the sacrifices made in the struggle for freedom. Green embodies the richness of the land, and white signifies harmony and tranquility.
Meaning of Inverted Flag in Other Countries
Globally, inverted flags have for many decades been used by sailors to signal that the ship’s crew was in distress and in need of assistance. The US, for instance, acknowledges the reason in its Constitution indicating that flags should not appear upside down “except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.”
Certain voyagers also utilized the reversed flag as a means of indicating to fellow individuals that the vessel had been seized by external powers, frequently involving terrorists.
Demonstrators globally employed the display of an inverted flag as a method of protest, symbolizing their disagreement with a governmental decision.
In other countries such as Thailand or Japan, the inverted flag has no special meaning at all.
