Pupil Attacked By Cheetah On His Way To School In Meru

A student in Junior Secondary School, attending Mweromuthanga Primary School located in Muthara Ward, Meru County, is currently recovering from severe injuries sustained during an encounter with a cheetah while on their way to school.

Community members reported that on Friday morning, the boy sounded the alarm while struggling to defend himself against the animal in an attempt to save himself.

His attempts were in vain, yet the creature vanished into dense foliage upon the arrival of the locals.

Senior Chief John K Mamira from the area observed and verified the occurrence, cautioning residents and their school-age children to be cautious of perilous animals roaming around during the nighttime.

Area residents have been lodging complaints with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) regarding the hazardous wildlife that has been attacking and fatally injuring their domestic animals without resolution.

They mentioned that instances of wild animals attacking people in the area were not uncommon, noting that fatalities occur annually.

In the previous month, packs of elephants trespassed onto farms located just a short distance from where the recent attack occurred on Friday. They fatally injured a 30-year-old man and caused extensive damage to crops valued at millions of shillings.

In a similar incident, hyenas assaulted shepherds in the lower regions of Muthara last year, biting three individuals who were subsequently treated and released.

The student has been transported to the Muthara sub-county hospital in Meru County for medical care.
