PS Offers Help to Hawker Whose Groundnuts Were Poured by Kanjos(Video)
Susan Auma, principal secretary of the State Department for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development, requested the assistance of Kenyans in locating a street vendor whose merchandise was looted by kanjos, also referred to as Nairobi County askaris.Â
The PS condemned the incident on Wednesday and implored the governor of Nairobi, Johnson Sakaja, to initiate a crackdown to eradicate rogue askaris.
“Dear compatriots, I implore your assistance in locating this hustler whose endeavors and livelihoods have been detrimentally impacted,” she stated.
In addition, the PS urged Sakaja to formalize and integrate micro and small businesses, as well as to designate operational zones for them.
PS Auma asserts that fostering an environment that is conducive to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is crucial to cultivating youthful entrepreneurs who contribute positively to the nation.
“Effective leadership necessitates the provision of guidance and viable alternatives. Let us champion the significance of small businesses in pursuit of delivering the plan,” she added.
Eric Omondi, a comedian-turned-activist, also initiated contact with the young man who was distraught after encountering the kanjos.Â

“When they destroy, we rebuild. I am looking for this boy. But remember, our time is coming,” Omondi, who heightened his philanthropy works after the August 2022 elections, stated.
Diverse opinions were expressed in response to the online viral video that portrayed the hawker sobbing uncontrollably after the askaris devastated his stock.
The video captured the groundnut vendor sobbing in the embrace of a supporter as she observed the merchandise strewn across the street.
A segment of the Kenyan populace, in agreement with PS Auma, denounced the conduct of the county officials and the underlying motivation that drove them to endanger the livelihood of the hawker.
“This is so heartbreaking, I feel the pain of the young boy. Why would anyone do that in this harsh economy?” A concerned Kenyan lamented.
However, it has been reported that the young man was devoid of the necessary licenses and permits to conduct business within the CBD.
Governor Sakaja pledged to discipline his askaris in early October when they were accused of harassing smoke and egg vendors.Â
