Prominent Kenyan Lawyer Passes Away After Short Illness
The legal community is mourning the loss of renowned lawyer and Senior Counsel Judy Thongori, who passed away after a brief illness.
With over three decades of expertise in family law, Thongori leaves behind a legacy of excellence and dedication.
In 2003, Thongori established Judy Thongori & Co. Advocates, a law firm that gained recognition for its expertise in family law litigation, advisory, and mediation.
Throughout her career, she represented numerous clients in family disputes at all judicial levels and was a vocal advocate for public awareness on family law through television, radio, and print platforms.
Her death has deeply impacted the legal profession, with many prominent lawyers paying tribute to her unparalleled contributions.
Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo described her as a “beacon of inspiration” and praised her for being a guiding light to both seasoned and aspiring lawyers.
“Judy Thongori SC was a monument of legal brilliance and professionalism,” Odhiambo said. “Her contributions to family law and human rights remain a timeless legacy, inspiring many within the profession.”

Thongori earned her LLB from the University of Nairobi and a postgraduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law, marking the start of a distinguished career.
She played a pivotal role in shaping family law policies, including significant contributions to the Matrimonial Property Act of 2013 and the Marriage Act of 2014.
Beyond her legislative work, she championed human rights and gender equality, training various stakeholders in law enforcement and the judiciary.
Her accolades reflect her commitment to justice. In 2013, she became the first woman inducted into the LSK’s “Roll of Honour” for distinguished service.
She received the Pro Bono Award in 2015 and was conferred the rank of Senior Counsel in 2020 for her exemplary work.
