Prisoner Stages Hollywood-Style Escape from Siaya GK Prison
An inmate at Siaya GK prison executed a daring prison escape, reminiscent of scenes from a movie, outsmartingย prison guardsย and slipping away unnoticed. Joseph Otieno Okombo, 27, serving a two-year sentence, masterminded the breakout, along with two accomplices, Fidel Omondi and George Akumu, whoย were later recapturedย according to a police report.
The breakout occurred during midday, prompting police to fire shots in an attempt to intimidate the escapees. An unnamed source within Siaya GK prison revealed that the inmates capitalized on an opportunity while weeding a garden adjacent to the prison.
Taking advantage of a momentary lapse in supervision, Okombo requested a brief break to relieve himself in a nearby bush, which the guards granted. Sensing success, his fellow inmates quickly followed suit, requesting similar breaks, indicating premeditated planning.

As the inmates vanished from sight, guards sounded the alarm and pursued them. The inmates scattered in different directions, attempting to confuse their pursuers. Faced with defiance, guards resorted to gunfire to subdue the fleeing prisoners.
The escapees utilized the cover of the thick vegetation surrounding the farm they were working on to facilitate their getaway. Despite their efforts, authorities managed to apprehend two of the escapees, while the search for Okombo continued.
Okombo, a resident of Ambira village in the Ugunja sub-county, remains at large, prompting an intensifiedย manhunt. Meanwhile, the recaptured inmates, Omondi and Akumu, are receiving medical treatment at Siaya County Referral Hospital for bullet wounds sustained during the pursuit.
Witnesses from Uhongo village reported hearing gunfire during the search, indicating the intensity of the pursuit.
