Priest Breaks Silence on Leaving Church, Wife, and Kids
Father Edwin Waiguru left the Roman Catholic priesthood and later joined the Catholic Charismatic Church due to inner conflicts. He shared that during a mission to Haiti, he would introduce himself as a Roman priest, but both he and others would recognize that he did not fully embody the Roman priesthood.
Waiguru revealed that after being sent to preach in North and South America, he began to feel a strong desire to marry and start a family.
“It troubled me to introduce myself as a Roman priest when, in reality, I am an African man. I became deeply interested in understanding what it means to be an African man and to explore our traditions. During a mission in the USA, I decided to leave the priesthood,” he explained.
During the global COVID-19 pandemic, Father Waiguru, now part of the Catholic Charismatic Church, met the woman who would eventually become his wife, prompting him to return home.

“When I came back after leaving the Roman Catholic Church, I expected a cold reception. However, due to the fear and social distancing caused by the pandemic, people didn’t confront me, which gave me the space to settle down and plan my life with my future wife,” he said.
Upon his return to Kenya, he chose to marry through a traditional ceremony, and the couple has been blessed with three children.
The wedding day saw Father Waiguru marry Margaret Wanjira Githui in a vibrant celebration at Michael’s Pot Gardens in Ikinu Githunguri.
“I was ordained as a Charismatic priest on the same day I solemnized my marriage. I am overjoyed, and God has blessed us with three children, and I continue to serve Him as a priest,” he said.
He emphasized that he remains a servant of God and identifies as Catholic, but his difference lies in the sacrament of marriage, as priests in his Church are allowed to marry.
In the Eastern Rite of the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church, married men are permitted to become priests.
