President Ruto was listed among the most influential Africans in 2023

The New African Magazine has listed nine Kenyans among the top 100 influential individuals in Africa.

The roster unveiled a couple of days before the start of the New Year, honors individuals from various fields across Africa who are making significant advancements and influencing others’ lives positively.

President William Ruto was included in the list within the politics and public service classification alongside other Kenyans.

Ruto’s recognition as one of the top 100 influential leaders globally by Times Magazine contrasts with domestic polls conducted by Tifa and InfoTrak, indicating a decline in his popularity within his home country.

The President, facing significant expectations to fulfill promises, blamed the opposition headed by ex-Prime Minister Raila Odinga for obstructing his plans. Additionally, he stated that recent worldwide events like the Russian invasion of Ukraine disrupted his plans for delivering services, following criticisms from Kenyans about his consistent dishonesty.

Opposition figures contended that the Kenya Kwanza government was using financial means to secure positions in both continental and global standings as a means of improving Ruto’s reputation.

“Why this desperation for validation?” Kileleshwa MCA and opposition politician Robert Alai questioned the New African Magazine, which credited Ruto for service delivery.

However, Kenya had a strong presence in the sports category of the New African Magazine, with Kelvin Kiptum and Faith Kipyegon both included in the list.

On October 8, 2023, Kelvin Kiptum achieved a new milestone in the men’s marathon by surpassing Eliud Kipchoge’s previous world record. Kiptum completed the marathon in 2 hours, clocking an impressive time of 2 hours and 35 seconds, surpassing Kipchoge’s record by more than 30 seconds.

In June 2023, the renowned Faith Kipyegon astonished the world by setting new records in both the 5,000 and 1,500 women’s marathon events within a week.

In the realm of advocating for Climate Change, James Irungu Mwangi and Wanjira Mathai were among the prominent figures included.

During the COP28 climate conference in Dubai, Irungu Mwangi, the creator of Africa’s Climate Action Platform, offered significant perspectives aimed at positioning Africa as a leading center for Climate Action.

Wanjira Mathai has been chosen by New Africa Magazine in the climate category for the second time, demonstrating her continued influence in devising approaches to tackle worldwide problems such as energy accessibility and the reduction of deforestation, highlighting her lasting impact over the years.

New African Magazine listed additional notable Kenyans, such as Equity Bank CEO James Mwangi in the business category, celebrity chef Ali Mandhry, filmmaker Wanuri Kaihiu, Environmentalist Wanjira Mathai, and Historian Chao Maina.
