President Ruto Ushers in New Year with Iconic Song “Kasongo”(Video)

President William Ruto welcomed the New Year in style, grooving to the classic tune “Kasongo” at the Kisii State Lodge. The performance brought smiles and laughter as the song, which has recently gained traction on social media, set the tone for the celebrations. Many online users have humorously linked the song to Ruto’s administration, adding a layer of political commentary to its revival.

The dance floor was shared by First Lady Rachel Ruto, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura, Education CS Julius Ogamba, South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro, and other leaders from the Nyanza region.

Unlike past presidents, such as Uhuru Kenyatta, Mwai Kibaki, and Jomo Kenyatta, who traditionally addressed Kenyans from Mombasa during New Yearโ€™s celebrations, Ruto chose Kisii for this year’s festivities.

    The Story Behind “Kasongo”

“Kasongo,” a timeless hit by the Congolese band Super Mazembe, is enjoying a revival in Kenya, fueled by its use in satirical social and political commentary. Originally composed by Alley Katele, the song narrates the heartfelt plea of a woman urging her estranged husband, Kasongo, to return home.

The track was inspired by a real-life incident in Eastleigh, Nairobi, where the band visited their friend Kasongo. Upon learning from his wife that he hadnโ€™t been home for days, the musicians crafted the song on the spot, recording it as a heartfelt message.

Super Mazembe, renowned for their Soukous music, was formed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) before relocating to Nairobi in 1974. They transitioned from their original name, Super Vox, to Super Mazembe, meaning “giant earth movers.” The group produced hits like Shauri Yako, Bwana Nipe Pesa, and Samba, with Kasongo becoming an enduring classic.

Today, the song resonates anew, connecting generations with its soulful melodies and newfound relevance in Kenyaโ€™s cultural and political conversations.
