President Ruto Embarks on Two-Day Official Visit to Germany

President William Ruto is scheduled to travel to Germany today for an official visit, during which he will witness the signing of a Bilateral Labor Agreement, concluding months of discussions between the two countries.

The labor mobility talks between Kenya and Germany commenced in March this year.

This will be Ruto’s third visit to Germany, following his previous trip in November last year.

During his initial visit in March, Ruto engaged in discussions with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz on enhancing social and economic relations between the two nations.

Germany has committed to admitting 250,000 professional, skilled, and semi-skilled Kenyans to address its substantial labor needs.

This agreement is expected to facilitate and regulate worker mobility, representing a significant advancement in their bilateral relations.

The second phase of technical negotiations for the Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement was completed in Nairobi in May.

A joint technical committee from both governments has been established to promptly develop a labor mobility framework.

State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed announced that during the two-day visit, Ruto will partake in several high-profile meetings anticipated to deliver substantial benefits for Kenyans.

“This visit not only reinforces the strong relationship between Kenya and Germany but also paves the way for new cooperation opportunities that will benefit both nations,” he stated.

Mohamed highlighted that this visit is a notable achievement in the enduring relationship between Kenya and Germany, spanning over six decades, and aims to enhance cultural, economic, and diplomatic connections.

Ruto will also participate in this year’s prestigious Citizen’s Festival, which is themed “Pamoja – Stronger Together.”

Kenya has been honored as the profile partner country for the festival, marking the first time a non-European nation has been chosen to partner with Germany for this event.

“This partnership provides a unique opportunity to showcase Kenya’s rich cultural heritage to the German audience,” he added.

Cultural exchange has been a fundamental aspect of the relationship, with institutions like the Goethe-Institut in Nairobi playing a key role in promoting German culture in Kenya since 1963.

The President is also set to have bilateral discussions with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

The talks will concentrate on deepening collaboration in areas such as green energy and climate action, digital cooperation, trade and investment, skills development and labor, and regional and international peace and security.

Additionally, Ruto will engage with prominent German business leaders in a special forum aimed at boosting trade and investment opportunities between Kenya and Germany.

Top executives from major companies including Mercedes Benz, YouTube, and AIDA Cruises are expected to attend the forum.

Germany stands out as a major foreign direct investor in Kenya, with over 100 German companies operating in the country and investments amounting to Sh150 billion.

Nairobi is home to the largest global office of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the regional office of Germany’s leading trade promotion agency, AHK.
